CHENNAI: It's been a while since Chennaiyin FC have won a game in the
Indian Super League. After three resounding victories, CFC have been stuck in a rut of sorts, playing out four consecutive draws.
With 13 points from eight matches, they now face a tough task as they lock horns with FC Pune City on Wednesday, who are just a point behind them, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here.
The winning team would gain an upper hand in qualifying for the semifinal.
"We believe that a couple of wins will be good. Around two more wins should do help us make it to the semis," said CFC assistant coach Vivek Nagul, adding that his team were aiming at least 20 points from the 14 games.
If Chennai win by a mar gin of at least three goals, they would go on top of the standings. Similarly, a win for Pune would take them to the second position in the table. The first-leg tie between the two teams ended 1-1 with Greece World Cup captain Kostas Katsouranis firing early for Pune and John Stiven Mendoza equalizing in the second half for Chennaiyin FC.
The biggest worry currently for CFC could be a misfiring Elano Blumer. The Brazilian is still the league’s top scorer but he hasn’t been able to recreate his magic in the last two games. Opponent defenders too are working well to block the marquee player from sneaking into the box easily. What makes things nightmarish for him is that he missed a penalty in the first-leg. There is good news for the hosts though.
Bernand Mendy, who missed the last two games due to leg injury, is fit to play Wednesday’s tie.
